How to get married legally in Bali?

To have official or legal wedding in Bali is possible almost for all couples. Legal wedding registration in Bali is not expensive and procedure is quite clear and simple. Possessing both Religious and Civil (or Legal) wedding ceremonies in Bali is recognized as legal by most of foreign countries. Please note that the procedure of legal marriage in Bali can a bit vary depending on your nationality and whether your country has a consulate or embassy in Bali or Indonesia. That’s why we recommend you to contact us first and check all details before you go any-further.

If you want to get legally married in Bali you should follow only 2 conditions:
- to be the same main religion with your partner.
- to provide us with simple documents that listed below.

Based on Indonesian Marriage Law No.1 of 1974 concerning, couple must be the same main religion. If not, bride or groom should sign a letter that he or she intends to marry in one of the religion they agreed without force from his/ her partner; the letter should be legalized by the consulate office or local government. In Indonesia are recognized the following main religions: Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity. To get legally married in Bali  you are required to have both a religious and legal ceremony (excepting Muslim couples). The religious ceremony and the legal ceremony must be held at the same location on the same day. That’s mean that at your wedding ceremony will be attended both representatives: from your religion (priest, monk, pastor etc) and from Indonesian Civil Registry Office (Kantor Catatan Sipil). And you will even get 2 certificates. In future you will need only legal certificate and religious can be for your memory.

For Muslims is no need for an additional civil ceremony. The religious ceremony is held by a representative of the ‘Kantor Urusan Agama’  which translates like  ‘The office of religious affairs’. And that ceremony is already considered as legal marriage in Bali or Indonesia.

Religious ceremonies under Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christian-Protestant  can be held everywhere in Bali: in villa, hotel, beach, cliff, temple etc.  If you intend to marry under Catholic religion you are required to do it  in a Catholic church in Bali and for reception you can choose any other place.

How it works?

If you and your partner are the same religion and wish to legally get married in Bali, you need to do next:

Step 1. Sending documents. Around 1,5 months before planned wedding day to send us by email following documents of both bride and groom (it can be JPEG or PDF files):

For all religions:

1. Copy of passport or KTP for Indonesian.
2. Copy of birth certificate.
3. Copy of document from Civil Registry Office in your city:
   - Copy of single certificate
   - or Copy of divorce certificate if you have been marriage before.
   - or Copy of death certificate for widow. 
4. Eight 4×6 cm photos, both partners side by side.
5. Copy of Letter signed by the priest or representative of your religion that have performed a religious according to your respective belief. Baptism certificate from church.
   Note: let us know if you don’t have this document. For Christians we can arrange baptism ceremony right away before your wedding ceremony. So, after that you will get baptism certificate also. 
6. Copy of passport of witnesses. Supply details of full names, address, professions, of the witnesses (two witnesses are required).  Note: let us know if you have no witnesses at your wedding ceremony. We can provide them. 
7. Domicile letter from place of staying of couple (hotel, villa etc). 
8. Filled out form from Indonesian Civil Office. Please, download form here. 
9. Copy of CNI Letter (Certificate of no Impediment to marriage in Indonesia). 
   More about CNI. The document called "CNI" (Certificate of Non Impediment to Marriage) and states that you have no objection to get married legally in Indonesia. This document is usually obtained from your consulate or your embassy in Indonesia. But it can also be issued by the local authorities in your home country. In both instances please do this well before your wedding day in Bali as requirements are can be different depending on embassy/consulate. Remember: this varies from country to country. For Catholic faith additionally must be provided:

• Reference letter as being single (unmarried) from the parish Church (bride/groom’s home country Church). 
• Marriage course certificate of completion issued by the parish Church. 
• Delegation letter from parish Church to the appointed Church in Bali. 

For Muslim faith additionally must be provided:

• Wali nikah/ Proxy of Bride's family to lead the ceremony. 

For Buddhism faith additionally must be provided:

• Fill in the Buddhist marriage blessing application obtained from Vihara wedding administration office.

For Hindu faith additionally must be provided:

• Statement letter that bride and groom are intended to get married in Hindu religion and to hold Hindu religion without force from other parties (For Full Legal Wedding in Hindu only). 

Step 2. Original documents. During pre-wedding meeting in Bali you should provide us with nex original documents:

• Copy of document from Civil Registry Office in your city: Copy of single certificate or Copy of divorce certificate or Copy of death certificate for widow. 
• Copy of Letter signed by the priest or representative of your religion that have performed a religious according to your respective belief. 
• Copy of CNI Letter (Certificate of no Impediment to marriage in Indonesia). 

Step 3. Legal wedding ceremony. Your legal or official wedding ceremony in Bali. As already noted above, at your wedding will be attended two representative: from Indonesian Civil Registry office and representative of your religion. You will get both Religious and Official marriage certificate in Indonesian and English languages and will become officially registered under Indonesian law. For most nationalities this certificate is valid in their countries.

Step 4 (optional). Registration process. For some nationalities (usually for those who have no consulate office in Bali) not registrated marriage certificate is not recognized in their country (for example, for russians). In our experience some newlyweds bring home their marriage certificates and registrate by themselves in their Civil offices. But some couple request us to handle procedure of registration. The procedure takes 2-3 month and held in newlywed’s embassy in Jakarta. After this process is completed, we send by DHL or Fedex registered documents that will be 100% valid in your country.
